Dinner at Annipie Malvar

Annipie is a homegrown restaurant that has expanded to more than just a place where people go to for their famous cinnamon rolls. There are a few items on the menu for those wanting to have their lunch or dinner, too. However, the promise of delicious desserts (with their famous cinnamon rolls, revel bars, cheese bars, butterscotch, and other pastries beckoning at you from a nearby glass shelf) is what makes every dine something to look forward to.

The Oriental Cream Dory (P 95) is a light dish that is perfect for fish lovers. The aroma coming from the ginger and onion helped to liven up the flavor of the fish. I can definitely taste the oriental flavors coming through and it was a delight to the taste buds.

This Bolognese Spaghetti (P 69) is just good. I expected nothing better, though. Or, it could be simply a matter of preference because Annipie's version is Filipino-style wherein the marinara sauce is slightly sweet whereas I prefer the Italian version that comes with a slightly tangy and savory sauce.

Oh, this Pistachio Sans Rival (P 85) came as a huge surprise for me. I was never a fan of pistachio before but now, I might reconsider. In fact, I prefer this one over the original buttery sans rival wherein I find the scent and flavor of the butter too overwhelming.

This cappuccino cinnamon roll (P 35) is notably one of the best desserts I have had in a long while. It is sweet, but not too sweet. Love the drizzle of cinnamon syrup to top it off, too. The aroma makes it all the more enticing.

Annipie's Delicious Cinnamon Rolls

"Annipie - Your Cinnamon Destination". With a restaurant bearing this particular tag line, you would expect nothing short of the best. And with Annipie, you can certainly expect to find the best cinnamon rolls in Davao, if not the Philippines. This store chain has been around since early 90's in Davao and they continue to expand with several new branches in the city, catering to the locals' yearning for their sinful and irresistibly good cinnamon rolls.

When I paid a visit to their Abreeza branch for the first time, I felt it was about time to treat myself to a piece (or two!) of their famed rolls. I don't know what took me so long to finally give their cinnamon rolls a try but taking a bite into it made me felt like it was years wasted of the opportunity to sample one of the best treats for my taste buds! I might sound exaggerating but I haven't been known to do that, and when I do it's because it's well deserved!

The quality of the cinnamon rolls from Annipie starts from the cinnamon bread in itself. It is soft with a right amount of cinnamon flavor and aroma that does not overpower. It sure is an upgraded version of your typical cinnamon bread! Then here comes the best part... the gooey and mouth-watering toppings (choices range from cappuccino and chocolate) and a drizzle of cinnamon syrup. These ingredients help to add the right amount of sweetness and aroma to an already delectable roll.

Have you tried Annipie's famous cinnamon rolls? If not, you should!

Week in Food

One of my favorite past time activity, obviously, is eating. I always like to try out new dishes and dining spots whenever I get the chance (or when the budget allows!). Here are some of the recent foodie spots I've paid a visit to:

Annipie

Dining at Annipie is always a treat for the senses. Stepping into the restaurant welcomes you with this beautiful aroma that revs up your appetite quickly! For my return visit, we sampled their Chicken Teriyaki and Lemon Fish Fillet. Both are excellent dishes and a truly hearty meal!

Greenwich Ilustre

I always love going back to Greenwich because they have one of the best tasting pizzas, apart from those authentic Italian restaurants that I've dined on. I just recently dropped by their Ilustre branch and ordered their All-Meat Overload Pizza and Chicken ala King. I have to note that their food items are excellent tasting, especially the pizza - even though they are affordable, they never scrimp on the toppings!

However, their crappy service at the Ilustre branch just spoils everything. Not only do the food takes a loooong time to get served, but their waiters and waitresses have become quite skilled at ignoring customers and pretending like they don't exist. This is one reason why I always think twice about dining here... and probably will look elsewhere next time. Lesson learned.

Backyard Burgers

Since tasting my first Backyard Burger, I can't seem to get enough. Hence, I went there earlier this month for a second trip and it was the same quality that I had enjoyed last time. The BB Yard Burger (P125) is always a staple with a visit to this burger joint. Plus, I also sampled their BB Extra Cheesy Burger (P140) for the first time. This one also comes with pure beef patty, cheddar cheese, black sesame bun, catsup, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, onion and its own steak sauce, and of course another slice of cheese to make every bite a lot more cheesy and savory!

Baywalk & Corazon Tourist Inn

There are not too many dining options in Puerto Princesa as there is in Davao. However, they have a pretty decent range of options that are good and reasonably priced. A seafood dinner at Baywalk is one good way to spend a lazy night, while enjoying the view of the sunset and listening to some bands play nearby. This grilled squid and barbecue dinner is as good as it can get for more or less PhP 200. Great deal, right?

And here's a glimpse into my final breakfast in Puerto Princesa...

Annipie: More Than Just Your Cinnamon Destination

I’ve been hearing about Annipie for a while now but never really had the chance to pay one of their branches a visit… until one Friday night when the boyf was hungry that we decided to drop by before having our gym session. Thankfully, their Malvar branch is just a short walking distance from the gym and so it was a convenient option for us.

The place was rather small but cozy. I love the dim lighting at the place and of course the captivating smell of cinnamon upon entering. And I instantly knew I had to taste one of their specialty cinnamon while I’m there. More on that later.

We opted for a light dinner because we were heading to gym after. And so, I went with the Lemon Butter Cream Dory (95) and E chose to have pasta – Classic Carbonara (85). The items on their menu were fairly affordable but maybe because it was also a medium-sized serving, ideal for people with a smaller appetite. But if you’re not yet satisfied, though, there is always a ton of dessert and sweets to choose from to fill you up.

The cream dory dish was nothing special, however. Although I did not really expect anything better at this price, I felt like it was lacking in seasoning. Don’t get me wrong – I love cream dory because it naturally tastes good and requires minimal seasoning. But I felt like there was little attention given to making this dish special (for lack of a better term). I feel like I can do a better job at preparing this dish at home (and no, I’m not kidding).

The classic carbonara redeemed it for us, though. The sauce was rich and creamy with the garlic bread sprinkled with dried basil leaves for added flavor and aroma. Two thumbs up!

And of course, the cinnamon roll was everything I had imagined it to be. I forgot to note how much each slice cost but whatever that cost may be is definitely worth it. I can see now why it’s been much raved about.

If you ever find yourself around Malvar Street, be sure to give them a visit. Highly recommended!

PS: Pardon the quality of the photos. My cam died on me again and had to make do with my camera phone to take food shots.
